About Srinagar Circle


About Srinagar Circle

The Department of Archaeology established in Jammu & Kashmir State in 1904 by His Highness Maharaja Ranbir Singh. The State Archaeology Department subsequently merged with Archaeological Survey of India in the year 1958 and named as Frontier Circle. Shri T. N. Khazanchi was the first Superintending Archaeologist of Srinagar Circle. Eminent Archaeologists like Shri R. S. Bisht, Shri B. M. Pande, R. C. Agarwal, R. S. Fonia and Dr. B. R. Mani have worked in the Circle.

At present the Srinagar Circle of Archaeological Survey of India is looking after the maintenance and upkeepment of 59 monuments located in Jammu Region and Kashmir Valley.

In the year 2010 a separate Mini Circle was created at Leh to look after the monuments of Ladakh Region.
